Bitcoin’s Golden Cross: Confirmation After the Momentum Thrust

By LaRue Gibson on September 14, 2026

William Shakespeare famously quipped “What Is Past Is Prologue.”  Success in most endeavors, including investment markets, requires an understanding of historical antecedents and learning from their implications for the future. Perhaps you know the phrase “Those who fail to learn from history are destined to repeat it.”  We prefer to apply what has come before to improve the probability of success and reduce the chances of failure. “This time is different” remain the four most dangerous words in investing. Reviewing history, through statistical data, may help improve opportunity while possibly reducing the likelihood of disaster.

In our August 25 Past Is Prologue, “$40 trillion of Debt, Bitcoin and the Search for a Store of Value,” we examined unusually powerful three- and five-trading-day advances in Bitcoin. Our purpose was not to recommend Bitcoin or suggest that short-term momentum should serve as a mechanical trading signal. Instead, we asked whether unusually powerful short-term advances had historically persisted.

History provided an interesting answer. Since 2017, Bitcoin advances at or above the 95th percentile over three trading days were followed by a median +25.5% return over the subsequent 63 trading days, while comparable five-day momentum thrusts were followed by a median +17.3% return. The median return across all 63-day periods was considerably lower at +6.6%. Positive returns occurred 68.9% and 66.0% of the time following the respective three- and five-day momentum thrusts, compared with 56.6% across all observations.

We concluded that unusually strong Bitcoin momentum has historically tended to persist. We did not know whether the current episode would follow history. We still do not. Since we published that research, however, Bitcoin has provided another piece of evidence: a Golden Cross.

From Momentum to Trend Confirmation

We define a Golden Cross as the 63-day exponential moving average crossing above the 250-day exponential moving average. The calculation uses trading-day observations, consistent with the methodology we apply elsewhere in our trend work. Rather than viewing the crossover as a buy signal, we view it as evidence about the character and direction of the underlying price trend.

Three- and five-day rates of change measure short-term price momentum. The relationship between the 63- and 250-day exponential moving averages examines the trend over considerably longer periods. In August, Bitcoin experienced unusually powerful short-term momentum. The Golden Cross followed several weeks later, indicating that the strength persisted long enough for the intermediate-term trend to cross above the longer-term trend.

Momentum got our attention; the Golden Cross provides confirmation.

What Happened After Previous Bitcoin Golden Crosses?

Bitcoin’s history provides relatively few observations, which requires appropriate restraint when interpreting the results. Using trading-day price observations, we identify six completed Golden Crosses before the current occurrence. Bitcoin was higher 63 trading days later following five of the six.

The median provides a more useful measure than the average because Bitcoin’s extraordinary early-period returns can heavily influence arithmetic averages. Following the six previous Golden Crosses, Bitcoin produced a +27.1% median 63-trading-day return and finished the period higher in 83.3% of the observations.

For perspective, ordinary rolling 63-day Bitcoin periods produced a considerably lower median return. Across the broader history beginning once sufficient observations exist to calculate the moving averages, the median rolling 63-day return was approximately +9.9%, with positive returns approximately 59.2% of the time. Using January 2017 forward—the period employed in our August momentum study—the median 63-day return was +6.6%, with a 56.6% positive rate.

The historical record therefore suggests that Bitcoin Golden Crosses have been associated with better-than-normal subsequent 63-day outcomes. Six observations do not provide enough evidence to draw strong statistical conclusions, but the results give us useful historical context for evaluating the current occurrence.

Did Momentum Come Before the Golden Cross?

Today’s circumstances prompted another question. Bitcoin’s recent extreme short-term momentum has now been followed by a Golden Cross. Did similar momentum precede previous Golden Crosses? The answer is frequently yes.

Every previous Golden Cross was preceded within 63 trading days by a three-day rate-of-change observation at or above the 85th percentile. Five of six were preceded by a comparable five-day momentum observation. More unusually, five of the six Golden Crosses were preceded by a 95th-percentile three-day momentum thrust, and four were preceded by a 95th-percentile five-day thrust.

Those four occurrences involving a 95th-percentile five-day momentum thrust followed by a Golden Cross produced subsequent 63-day returns of +32.1%, +29.7%, +24.4%, and +6.7%. All four were positive, with a median return of +27.1%.

Four observations are far too few to declare a statistically reliable relationship, and an interesting historical pattern should not become something it is not. The sequence nevertheless provides useful context for today’s circumstances: an unusually powerful short-term advance has been followed by confirmation from the intermediate- and long-term trend relationship.

Why We Study Bitcoin

Our interest lies in the process rather than Bitcoin itself. Strong momentum can provide information about the persistence of a price move, while trend measures can help determine whether that strength has broadened beyond a short-term burst. Neither guarantees a successful outcome, and neither should stand alone as an investment decision. When multiple measures of price behavior point in the same direction, however, they can strengthen the weight of the evidence and potentially improve the probability of identifying a durable directional move not to mentioned one’s confidence to stay the course despite any noise to the contrary.

Bitcoin offers a particularly visible example. The August momentum thrust identified unusually strong short-term price behavior; the subsequent Golden Cross tells us that the move did not immediately dissipate. The sequence reinforces a principle applicable beyond Bitcoin: unusually strong momentum followed by confirmation from the broader trend can provide more useful evidence than either observation considered by itself.

Confirmation, Not Prediction

Our August research asked whether unusually powerful Bitcoin momentum tended to persist. The historical record suggested that it did. We specifically cautioned against interpreting the results as a mechanical trading signal and instead used historical evidence to understand how prices behaved following similar momentum episodes. Today’s Golden Cross gives us an opportunity to examine what happened when strong short-term momentum was subsequently confirmed by a longer-term trend measure.

The two measures are not statistically independent because both ultimately derive from price. They do, however, examine price behavior over quite different periods. The momentum thrust identified unusually powerful short-term acceleration. The Golden Cross indicates that strength subsequently persisted long enough to affect the relationship between Bitcoin’s intermediate- and longer-term trends. That progression—from momentum to trend confirmation—is what interests us.

Again, LRG Wealth Advisors does not recommend Bitcoin or cryptocurrency through this research. We use Bitcoin as a test case to examine a broader investment principle that forms an important part of our trend work: strong momentum can contain information, and subsequent confirmation from the broader trend can strengthen the weight of the evidence. These tools cannot predict the future, but when thoughtfully applied across securities and markets, they can help investors determine whether price behavior is confirming or contradicting an investment thesis and potentially improve the probability of successful decisions.

Markets do not provide certainty. They provide evidence that accumulates or deteriorates over time. Bitcoin’s three- and five-day momentum thrusts provided one piece of evidence in August. The Golden Cross provides additional confirmation today. Whether Bitcoin follows the path of most previous occurrences remains unknown, but the progression illustrates why we study momentum and trend together rather than attempting to forecast what markets should do.
